How to Change the Aspect Ratio of a Video (Without Stretching It)

Set a new frame size, then crop, fit or blur your footage into it. Exact steps for online tools, AI reframing, Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve and your phone, plus the right ratio for every platform.

How to Change Aspect Ratio of Video Easily & Quickly
On this page

To change a video's aspect ratio, set a new frame size in your editor (9:16 at 1080x1920 for TikTok, Reels and Shorts, 16:9 at 1920x1080 for YouTube), then crop the footage to fill that frame or fit it inside with bars or a blurred background. Never stretch it.

The step most people get wrong is the crop. A centered 9:16 crop of a 16:9 video keeps less than a third of the original width, so anyone standing off-center drops out of the shot. Decide what must stay in frame before you pick a method; the sections below show how to do it online, with AI reframing, in Premiere Pro, in DaVinci Resolve and on your phone.

Aspect ratio vs. video dimensions: what you are actually changing

Aspect ratio is the shape of the frame, written width:height. Dimensions (or resolution) are the pixel count. 1920x1080 and 1280x720 are both 16:9; 1080x1920 is the same shape turned upright, 9:16.

So "how to change video dimensions" has two different answers:

  • Same shape, different pixel count (1920x1080 to 1280x720): this is resizing. Any export dialog does it and nothing gets cut.
  • New shape (16:9 to 9:16, 1:1 or 4:5): this is changing the aspect ratio. Something has to give: you crop part of the image, add space around it, or distort it.

Crop, fit or blur: three ways to fill a new frame

Diagram: 9:16 crop window inside a 16:9 frame with sides cut off, next to a 16:9 video fitted in a 9:16 frame with bars
Cropping fills the screen but cuts the sides; fitting keeps the whole image but adds bars.
MethodWhat happensUse it when
Crop (reframe)The video is scaled up until it fills the new frame, then positionedThe subject fits in the new shape: one speaker, a product, a face
Fit (letterbox or pillarbox)The whole video stays visible, with bars on the top and bottom (letterbox) or the sides (pillarbox)Every part of the image matters: slides, screen recordings, group shots
Blurred backgroundThe video is fitted, and the empty space is filled with an enlarged, blurred copy of the same clipYou need the full image but plain black bars look out of place in a vertical feed
StretchPixels are distorted to the new shapeNever: people look tall and thin or short and wide

The decision rule: if the important action sits in a narrow part of the frame, crop. If it spans the full width, fit or blur. If it moves across the frame, crop with keyframes or AI reframing (below).

To build a blurred background in any editor, duplicate the clip onto the track below, scale the lower copy until it fills the whole frame, add a Gaussian blur to it, and leave the upper copy fitted at its original shape.

For TikTok, the answer to "what ratio is a TikTok video" is 9:16; TikTok Studio Web also accepts landscape uploads, but a 16:9 video only fills a band across the middle of a phone screen. The TikTok video aspect ratio guide covers covers and framing in more detail. Instagram's feed rules have more variations than Reels; see the Instagram video formats guide.

For YouTube, regular videos are 16:9 and Shorts are vertical or square. Exact pixel sizes, including thumbnails, are in the YouTube video size guide. Hootsuite keeps a social media video specs list that is useful as a second reference, and Dacast has a good explainer on how video aspect ratios evolved if you want the background on 4:3 and 16:9.

What aspect ratio is 1080x1920?

1080x1920 is 9:16, the vertical full HD frame used by TikTok, Reels and Shorts. Both numbers reduce to 9 and 16. Its landscape twin, 1920x1080, is 16:9.

How do you make a video 1:1 (square)?

Set the frame to 1080x1080. From a 16:9 source, crop the sides; from a 9:16 source, crop the top and bottom. Center the subject, and keep text away from the edges, because square crops leave little margin. For Instagram feed posts, 4:5 usually beats 1:1 because it is taller on the screen.

How to change aspect ratio online (no editing software)

The fastest route is a browser-based aspect ratio changer. With Revid's online video resizer:

  1. Upload your video.
  2. Pick the target format: portrait 9:16, feed 4:5, landscape 16:9 or square 1:1.
  3. Watch the result before downloading and check that faces and on-screen text are still in frame.

If your source is a long YouTube video and you want several vertical clips rather than one resized file, paste the link into Revid's YouTube to TikTok converter. It turns the video into vertical clips that you can edit, caption and publish to TikTok, Instagram or YouTube from the same account.

How to convert a 16:9 video to 9:16 with AI reframing

A plain center crop fails as soon as the subject moves. An AI aspect ratio changer solves this by detecting the subject in each frame and moving the crop window to follow it, which is what you want for interviews, demos and anything with movement. For the reasons vertical framing matters on mobile feeds, see the vertical video aspect ratio guide.

Your options:

  • Premiere Pro Auto Reframe: reframes a whole sequence to a new ratio (steps below).
  • DaVinci Resolve Smart Reframe: included in DaVinci Resolve Studio, the paid version.
  • Online tools such as the Revid resizer above, when you do not want to open an editor.

Always review the output. AI reframing struggles with two people talking side by side (it may cut between them at the wrong moment), fast camera moves, and burned-in text or lower thirds near the edges of the original frame.

How to change aspect ratio in Premiere Pro (make a video 1080x1920)

In Adobe Premiere Pro, you change the aspect ratio by changing the sequence, not the clip.

  1. Go to File > New > Sequence, open the Settings tab and set Editing Mode to Custom.
  2. Set Frame Size to 1080 horizontal and 1920 vertical, and Pixel Aspect Ratio to Square Pixels. Name the sequence and click OK.
  3. Drag your clip onto the timeline. If a Clip Mismatch Warning appears, choose Keep existing settings so the sequence stays vertical.
  4. To fit, right-click the clip and choose Set to Frame Size. To crop, open Effect Controls > Motion and raise Scale until the frame is full, then adjust Position.
  5. If the subject moves, add Position keyframes so the frame follows them.
  6. Export with File > Export > Media and confirm the output size reads 1080x1920.

The faster route for a finished 16:9 edit: select the sequence and use Sequence > Auto Reframe Sequence, pick the target ratio (Vertical 9:16, Square 1:1 and others), and Premiere creates a new, reframed copy that tracks the action. Review it shot by shot and fix any frame it got wrong by hand.

How to change video size in DaVinci Resolve

DaVinci Resolve sets the frame at the timeline level, and the free version handles everything except Smart Reframe.

  1. Create a timeline with File > New Timeline, untick Use Project Settings, and open the Format tab. (For an existing timeline, right-click it in the Media Pool and choose Timelines > Timeline Settings.)
  2. Set Timeline Resolution to Custom and enter 1080 x 1920 for vertical, 1080 x 1080 for square or 1920 x 1080 for widescreen.
  3. Under Mismatched resolution files, choose Scale full frame with crop to fill the frame, or Scale entire image to fit to letterbox. Avoid Stretch frame to all corners.
  4. Select a clip and use the Inspector's Transform controls (Zoom and Position) to reframe it. Keyframe Position for moving subjects.
  5. In Resolve Studio, Smart Reframe in the Inspector does the tracking for you.
  6. On the Deliver page, check that the render resolution matches the timeline.

How to change aspect ratio on your phone

  • CapCut: open the project, tap the ratio option in the bottom toolbar, pick 9:16, 1:1, 4:5 or 16:9, then pinch and drag the clip to reframe it. The free tier includes the full editor and 1080p export.
  • iPhone Photos: open the video, tap Edit, then Crop, tap the aspect ratio button and pick a preset such as 9:16 or square. This crops only; it cannot add bars or a blurred background.

How to make a video wide (turn any video into 16:9)

Going from vertical to 16:9 is the hard direction, because there is little width to work with. You have two choices:

  1. Pillarbox with a blurred background (best for most clips): put the 9:16 video in a 1920x1080 timeline, fit it, and fill the sides with a blurred, enlarged copy.
  2. Crop the top and bottom: only works when the action is in a horizontal strip, because you keep a small part of the image and the result is scaled up, so it looks softer.

If you are preparing footage for a YouTube upload, the guide to cropping videos for YouTube goes through the YouTube-specific cases.

How to fix a stretched or squashed video

A video looks stretched when its pixels were forced into a new shape instead of cropped or fitted. Common causes and fixes:

  • The editor stretched mismatched clips: in Resolve, switch Mismatched resolution files to Scale full frame with crop or Scale entire image to fit. In Premiere, reset Scale and turn Uniform Scale back on.
  • Wrong pixel aspect ratio: in Premiere, right-click the clip, choose Modify > Interpret Footage and set the pixel aspect ratio to Square Pixels.
  • Export size does not match the frame: if the timeline is 1080x1920, export at 1080x1920, not 1920x1080 or a preset that rescales.

If the stretched file is the only copy you have, scale it back in one direction until faces look right, then crop or fit it into the target frame.

FAQ

Can you change a video's aspect ratio without losing quality?

Yes if you fit it with bars, because no pixels are cropped or rescaled. Cropping 1920x1080 footage to vertical leaves fewer pixels than a 1080x1920 frame needs, so the crop gets scaled up and looks softer; shoot or export the source at 3840x2160 when you plan to crop.

Is there a free aspect ratio changer?

Yes. The free version of DaVinci Resolve, CapCut's free tier and the iPhone Photos crop tool all change aspect ratio at no cost. Online tools are faster when you only need one file resized.

Can I post a horizontal video on TikTok?

Yes, TikTok accepts landscape uploads, but a 16:9 video fills only a band across the middle of the screen. Convert it to 9:16 with a crop or a blurred background so it fills the phone.

How do I optimize one video for every screen size?

Edit one master at the highest resolution you have, keep the subject near the center while filming, then export a separate version per ratio: 9:16 for TikTok, Reels and Shorts, 4:5 for feeds and 16:9 for YouTube. Check each version in its platform's safe zone before posting.
