At Revid.ai, we sit at the intersection of AI and content creation. Over 15,919 active creators used our platform in 2025 alone generating 429,105 exported videos in a single year. That gives us a front-row seat to what actually works, at scale.
So we did something no other platform has done: we analyzed 756,851 videos created on Revid.ai across TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts. What we found will challenge some of the most common assumptions about short-form content.

The Hook Is Everything And Questions Win

Ask any TikTok creator what matters most in a video and they'll say the same thing: the hook. The first three seconds determine whether a viewer keeps scrolling or keeps watching. But what kind of hook actually performs best?
We ran a classifier across 348,346 exported videos from 2025 with usable script data. The results are clear: question-based hooks are the most commonly used intentional hook type and for good reason.

A few things stand out. First, 73.5% of video openings don't fit neatly into the four classical hook categories which suggests that the most effective hooks are often unique, contextual, and hard to replicate with a formula.
Second, among those that do follow a pattern, questions dominate nearly doubling the next closest category (bold statement at 6.6%). The psychological mechanism is well-established: open loops. Our brains are wired to seek closure, and a well-placed question creates exactly that tension.
The average Revid.ai script runs 117.5 words roughly 60–75 seconds of spoken content at a natural pace. That means the hook occupies the first 10–15 words of a ~120-word story. Every single word counts.

The largest single bucket is 90+ seconds at 35.7%, followed by 31–60 seconds at 31.1%. Together, these two ranges account for over two-thirds of all exported content. The sub-30-second range what most people think of when they hear "short video" represents only 16.3% of Revid.ai output.

Nearly 8 in 10 videos exported from Revid.ai in 2025 were in 9:16 vertical format. The 20.9% share for 16:9 landscape reflects creators producing content for YouTube's main feed or repurposing short content for desktop-first contexts a growing secondary workflow on the platform.
The near-disappearance of square (1:1) format once dominant on Instagram reflects the platform's own pivot toward Reels as its primary content type.

The near-universal adoption of animated captions where text appears word-by-word or phrase-by-phrase in sync with the audio is not a coincidence. Animated captions do two things simultaneously: they make content accessible for silent viewers, and they create a visual rhythm that actively guides attention. They're not a caption style. They're a retention mechanism.
Caption adoption was near-universal in H1 2025 before settling at around 84–87% from August onward. The slight softening in H2 may reflect an influx of new creator types musicians and entertainment creators, for example who prioritize visual aesthetics over accessibility.

Methodology

The data in this report is based on the analysis of 756,851 successful export records from the Revid.ai platform, covering activity up to and including 2025. The 2025 cohort alone consists of 429,105 exported projects created by 15,919 unique active creators.
All data is aggregated at the platform level. Individual users cannot be identified from any finding in this report. Hook type classification was performed using a heuristic NLP classifier applied to the first sentence of script text across 348,346 projects with usable source content. Content category classification was performed using a separate heuristic text classifier across 2025 exported projects with usable source text.
Narration style was derived from project creation parameters on classifiable exports. Duration data was sourced from Amplitude's tracked render events. Geographic and language data was derived from user-level metadata and project language fields respectively. 17.7% of projects had unknown or auto-detected language and are excluded from language percentage calculations.
This report represents a snapshot of creator behavior on the Revid.ai platform and may not be representative of all short-form video content published across TikTok, Instagram Reels, or YouTube Shorts.
