Celebrating Durga Puja: A Spiritual Journey

*Mahalaya* marks the beginning of Devi Paksha and is observed seven days before Durga

Puja. It signifies Goddess Durga’s descent to Earth. On this day,

people perform *tarpan* at riverbanks to honor their ancestors. The early morning recitation of “Mahishasura

Mardini” on radio, narrating the Goddess’s victory over evil, creates a spiritually charged atmosphere.

Mahalaya also marks the transition from *Pitru Paksha* (ancestral fortnight) to *Devi Paksha* (fortnight

of the Goddess). For many, it’s an emotional, nostalgic start to Durga Puja,
