Your brain’s broken braking system is the real reason you might be drinking more than your friends.
A new study on college students found that having even mild ADHD symptoms is heavily linked to
higher alcohol use, but not for the reason you think. It is not about being lazy or unmotivated.
It is specifically about a lack of inhibitory self-regulation. Basically, your brain struggles
to slam on the brakes when an impulse hits. The research proves that if you want
to cut back, you do not need more motivation, you just need to train your brain’s
ability to actually say stop.
