Afraid of Honest Love

I rejected him because he was honest. And that’s the part I still can’t forgive myself for.

When I asked about his past, he didn’t hesitate. He didn’t soften it.

He didn’t turn himself into a hero. He told me about his exes. About the mistakes

he made. About the times he hurt people. And the times he got hurt.

He didn’t say it proudly. He said it calmly. Like the truth didn’t need decoration.

And that terrified me. I had no dating experience. I didn’t know how

love worked. I thought honesty meant danger. I thought it meant he could leave at

any moment. Another man told me what I wanted to hear. That I was special.
