In 1875, a young Swiss chocolatier named Daniel Peter faced a delicious dilemma.

He loved chocolate, but it was bitter, grainy, and hard. He dreamed of creating

something smoother and sweeter, a chocolate that would melt gently on the tongue.

Daniel worked in the lakeside town of Vevey, where his neighbour was none other than

Henri Nestlé, the inventor of sweetened condensed milk. Daniel often saw

the tins of creamy milk being loaded for sale and wondered, could that be the key?

For years, he tried to combine chocolate and milk, but every attempt failed.

Fresh milk spoiled the chocolate, and the mixture refused to amalgamate properly.
