Asiatic black bears in Kashmir's Dachigam National Park have completely stopped hibernating for
the first time ever, and this could spell disaster for both wildlife and humans. For centuries,
these bears retreated to caves and dens from November to March, surviving harsh
Himalayan winters by slowing their metabolism and living off stored fat. This winter dormancy
was so reliable that entire ecosystems evolved around their absence. But something unprecedented
happened in winter 2024. Scientists found fresh bear tracks, droppings,
and direct sightings throughout December and January, proving these apex predators stayed
active all winter long. This isn't just unusual, it's alarming.
