Baking Soda Effectively Removes Pesticides

Baking soda removes up to 96% of pesticides from fruits according to a University of Massachusetts

study. While vinegar and plain water are commonly used, neither comes close

to baking soda's effectiveness. The research showed that soaking apples in a baking soda

solution for just 12 to 15 minutes stripped away nearly all surface pesticide residues.

The alkaline nature of baking soda breaks down pesticide molecules that cling to fruit skin.

However, food safety experts clarify that while baking soda excels at removing dirt

and pesticide residues, it doesn't actually sanitize or kill bacteria. For the best results,

mix one teaspoon of baking soda with two cups of water and let your produce soak before rinsing
