Baroque Christmas music wasn't one thing. It was everything from massive oratorios
filling cathedrals to simple instrumental pastorales. Bach's Christmas Oratorio stretched
across six cantatas, one for each service from Christmas Day to Epiphany. Handel's Messiah,
the piece everyone associates with December now, wasn't even written for Christmas.
It premiered at Easter. But those Nativity movements were so powerful that by
the 1800s, Christmas claimed them entirely. Corelli went a completely different direction.
His Christmas Concerto is purely instrumental, ending with a gentle pastoral that evokes shepherds watching
their flocks. No words needed. Just atmosphere. What's fascinating is how geography
