Top Gun used real Navy F-14 Tomcats and actual aircraft carriers to film the movie.
The producers mounted cameras everywhere on the jets: under the belly, on the wings,
even on the tail to capture those insane aerial shots. The famous beach volleyball scene
wasn't even in the original script, it was added last minute. During cockpit filming,
actors sat in mock-ups while crew sprayed them with water and pumped in fog to simulate combat
conditions for hours. The film was inspired by a 1983 magazine article about real fighter pilots at
Miramar, and Maverick's callsign Ghostrider actually belonged to a real F-14 squadron.
