signed by a corporation that would end up paying just forty-three cents per share for the deadliest
industrial disaster in human history. This is the story of how insurance loopholes,
liability shields, and absolute corporate greed turned a massacre into what executives privately called
their best financial year on record. It is December third, nineteen eighty-four. The city of Bhopal
in central India is sleeping. It is a cold winter night, and in the narrow,
cramped lanes of the Jayaprakash Nagar neighborhood, families are huddled together for warmth.
These are the working poor, the laborers, the people who built the city.
