Birthdays and Biblical Worship

“In the Bible, birthdays are mentioned only a few times—and never in a positive light.

Pharaoh’s birthday ended with an execution (Genesis 40:20–22), and King Herod’s birthday led to

the beheading of John the Baptist (Matthew 14:6–10). Scripture gives no example of God’s

servants celebrating their own births. Historically, birthday celebrations trace back to pagan

practices that focused on self-exaltation and appeasing spirits. While many religions and cultures celebrate

birthdays today, the Bible consistently directs honor and glory to God—not to oneself.

The lesson is this: God calls His people to humility and obedience. True worship follows

Scripture—not tradition, even when tradition is popular.”
