Guyana’s landscape is defined by rivers, and its bridges are more than concrete and steel.
They are symbols of connection in a country once divided by water highways and boat crossings.
For decades, the most famous bridge in the land was the Demerara Harbour Bridge,
a long floating pontoon bridge opened in 1978 that carried vehicles and people across the Demerara
River between the East and West Banks. It served daily commuters, workers,
traders, and students for almost five decades, far beyond its originally intended lifespan.
In 2025, a new era began with the opening of the Bharrat Jagdeo Demerara River Bridge,
a modern four lane high span crossing that replaced the old floating structure. Commissioned on
