Chess Piece Movement Basics

Learning chess piece movement is simpler than you think. Pawns move forward one square,

two on their first move, and capture diagonally. Rooks slide straight in any direction.

Bishops move diagonally only. Knights jump in an L shape, two squares one

way and one square perpendicular. Queens combine rook and bishop moves, going anywhere straight

or diagonal. Kings move one square in any direction. The knight is the only piece that

can hop over others. Master these basics and you will understand every possible move on the board.
