Chicago River: Humans Reversed Its Flow

This American river literally flows in two opposite directions… and humans made it happen.

This is the Chicago River — and it used to flow straight into Lake Michigan, the city’s main

drinking water source. But in the late 1800s, Chicago had a huge problem… all of

its sewage was flowing right into the lake. So in 1900, engineers did something insane — they reversed

the ENTIRE river. They raised the riverbed, built massive canals, and forced the water

to flow away from the lake instead. Now the river flows west and south — straight toward

the Mississippi River system. So yes… this river used to flow one way — and humans
