Child Protection in International Law

With respect to international law, <break time="1.0s" /> Article 19 of the UN Convention on the Rights of the

Child 1989 requires <break time="1.0s" /> the State to take all appropriate measures to protect children from physical

or mental violence,<break time="1.0s" /> injury, or abuse while in the care of parents or others. <break time="1.0s" />

There are similar obligations under the European Convention on Human Rights. <break time="1.0s" /> Specifically,

Article 3 of the European Convention on Human Rights, which provides for a right to be free

from torture, inhuman and degrading treatment,<break time="1.0s" /> and punishment. Article 3 ECHR prohibits torture and inhuman

or degrading treatment. <break time="1.0s" />
