In the 100+ year history of the NFL, only one player has ever died on the field during
an official game Chuck Hughes, a wide receiver for the Detroit Lions .
On October 24, 1971 in a game against the Chicago Bears at Tiger Stadium, Hughes suddenly
collapsed late in the fourth quarter at just 28 years old and was later pronounced dead
at a Detroit hospital. Hughes had caught a 32-yard pass shortly before collapsing, and doctors later
determined he suffered a coronary thrombosis (a fatal blood clot to the heart) making him the only NFL
player to actually die during play. This tragic moment remains one of the darkest in NFL history
and highlights the importance of player health and safety in America’s most popular sport.
