Coral Reefs: A Dying Ecosystem

degree above normal, coral expels its colorful algae partners and turns ghost white.

This is called bleaching, and it's happening worldwide. Think of coral like you and your best

friend surviving together. The coral provides shelter while tiny algae make food

through photosynthesis. But when water gets too hot, this partnership breaks down.

The algae leave, and without them, coral starves. Within weeks, entire reef systems

can die. These underwater cities support 275 million people and provide 12% of the
