Coral reefs cover less than 0.2% of the ocean but hold 30% of all marine species.
That's like cramming the entire population of New York into a single neighborhood. These underwater
cities are built by tiny animals that team up with colorful algae in a perfect partnership.
But when ocean temperatures spike just half a degree above normal, the algae panic and bail out.
The coral turns ghost white, a process called bleaching. Without their algae
roommates, corals starve. It's like losing your job and your grocery store simultaneously.
Since the 1980s, we've lost 19% of all reefs worldwide. The Great Barrier Reef alone dropped
from 28% coral cover to just 13%. These aren't just pretty rocks. They protect coastlines,
