Coral Reefs in Crisis

Coral reefs are dying at an alarming rate and most people have no idea why. When ocean temperatures

rise just half a degree above 28 Celsius, corals literally kick out the colorful

algae living inside them. These tiny algae are their food source and without them,

corals starve and turn ghost white. This is coral bleaching. The 2015 bleaching event wiped out

90 percent of Australia's Great Barrier Reef. Scientists estimate 19 percent of all reefs are already

destroyed. The algae and coral have lived together for 160 million years,
