Coral Reefs on the Brink

Coral reefs are the ocean's rainforests, and they're vanishing before our eyes. These underwater

cities cover just 0.2% of the ocean but house 30% of all marine species. Here's what's killing

them: when water temperature rises just half a degree above normal, corals expel their

colorful algae partners and turn ghost white. Think of it like evicting your chef when you're starving.

These algae provide up to 95% of the coral's food through photosynthesis. Without them,

corals starve within weeks. We've already lost 19% of reefs worldwide. The Great Barrier

Reef lost half its coral cover in 27 years. Scientists predict 2 degrees of warming

could destroy 99% of remaining reefs.
