Creative Coding in a Broken System

I coded my patient's heart attack as indigestion because his insurance denied the admission.

My attending found out, pulled me into the stairwell, and instead of firing

me, she whispered that she does it too. Turns out half our department games

the system just so patients can get the care they need without bankruptcy. We're taught to

save lives, but nobody prepared us for choosing between our medical licenses and watching

someone suffer because of a billing code. Last week, our chief of medicine called a secret

meeting. Apparently, the hospital knows and they've been protecting us because

their profit margins depend on our creative coding. We're all complicit in a broken system
