Crocodiles can hold their breath for over an hour while hunting underwater. They slow their
heart rate down to just two or three beats per minute, entering a state so still they become
invisible to prey. Their eyes and nostrils sit on top of their skull, letting them see
and breathe while their massive bodies stay completely submerged. When they strike,
they explode from the water at speeds up to 25 miles per hour, clamping down with
the strongest bite force of any animal on Earth. That patient stillness is the secret.
They can wait motionless for hours, burning almost no energy, until the perfect
moment arrives. Then it is already too late for their prey.
