Sophie watched the garden disappear beneath a curtain of rain. Fat drops splattered

against the glass like tears. The sky was grey and heavy, and everything outside

looked dreary and sad. “What a dismal day,” sighed Mummy, looking at the weather.

“I’m afraid the fair has been cancelled.” Dismal means causing a mood of gloom or misery.

Sophie’s heart sank. She had been looking forward to the village fair for weeks. Now there would

be no carousel rides, no candyfloss, no games. The cancelled fair felt as dreary and

miserable as the clouds overhead. “This is the most dismal Saturday ever,” Sophie mumbled,

slumping onto the sofa. The rain kept falling, making everything seem even more miserable.
