The scene with Elijah under the broom tree is not just a story of miraculous catering.
It is a profound revelation of the nature of God's provision. God does not intervene
when Elijah is merely complaining in the wilderness, but when he is collapsing. The provision comes
not at the first sign of discomfort, but at the brink of total dissolution. This is a recurring
theme, manna in the desert after the Israelites' food is gone, water from the rock
at the peak of their thirst. God allows our own resources to be utterly exhausted
so that when his provision comes, there is no possible delusion that we provided it for
ourselves. It is a grace that meets us not at our strength, but at our surrender.
