Inside the King Road home, investigators found a single piece of evidence that would
crack the case open — a tan leather knife sheath lying beside two of the victims.
On its snap button, they discovered one male DNA sample. They didn’t know whose it was.
But modern forensic genealogy would soon reveal the truth. When detectives
ran the sample through genealogy databases, it matched a family in Pennsylvania. Police then secretly
collected trash from outside a home and confirmed it was from the father of their prime suspect.
Which meant the killer’s DNA belonged to the son. His name was Bryan Christopher Kohberger,
a 28-year-old criminology PhD student at Washington State University just 10 miles from the crime scene.
