DNR vs CPR: Legal or Right?

I walked in on my attending doing chest compressions on a patient who had signed a DNR

that morning. The family was screaming. He looked me dead in the eye and said keep going.

The daughter had begged him to try anyway. Her mom changed her mind,

she swore it. But there was nothing in writing. Just her word against a legal document.

We coded her for forty minutes. Got her back. She died two days later after suffering

through hell. He told me sometimes you have to choose between what's legal and what's right.

But I saw her face when she signed that DNR. She knew exactly what she wanted.

Did he save her or torture her? Would you have stopped?
