Durham Region wasn't always the powerhouse it is today. Back in 1974, the provincial government
merged eight separate municipalities into one regional government, creating what we now call Durham.
This area played a crucial role during the War of 1812, with Oshawa serving as a key military
supply route. The region's name actually comes from Lord Durham, who investigated
the 1837 rebellions in Canada. Fast forward to today, Durham is one of
the fastest growing regions in Ontario, home to over 700,000 people. The automotive industry
put Oshawa on the map when General Motors opened their plant in 1953. Durham also boasts
some of Ontario's best preserved heritage buildings and the stunning Oak Ridges Moraine runs right
