Electrolysis of water is a chemical process used to separate water (H₂O) into its component
gases, hydrogen and oxygen, using electricity. Two electrodes are placed in the water
and connected to a battery or power supply. One electrode is negative (cathode),
and the other is positive (anode). When electricity flows through the water,
it causes a chemical reaction that splits the water molecules. Hydrogen gas forms at the cathode because
water molecules gain electrons there (reduction), and oxygen gas forms at the anode because
water molecules lose electrons there (oxidation).
