Saying the book was better is the laziest critique you can possibly make.
We treat movies like they committed a crime if they change a single scene from the novel,
obsessing over fidelity like the director cheated on the author. But adaptation theory actually says that
stories are meant to be recycled. It is not about copying the source material perfectly;
it is about mutation. A story has to evolve to survive in a new era or a new medium.
Think of it like a remix. If the movie was exactly like the book,
there would be no point in making it.
