Fields of Despair

The rain has stopped, but the fields stay dead. Blackened earth where

our hopes once fed. I hold you close, though your breath

grows thin. A famine night steals the warmth within. Ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah.

The village church tolls a hollow cry. Shadows march where the young ones

die. Your trembling hand in my failing grasp, like autumn leaves

too weak to last. Mama, why does the daylight fade?

Why does the world forget the prayers we made? Oh God,

the fields lie cold and bare. A land in mourning, soaked in despair.
