Most people believe history punishes those who are wrong. They imagine ignorance being corrected,
lies being exposed, and truth eventually standing victorious. But history doesn’t actually work that
way. More often than not, history punishes those who are right
too early. It is not truth itself that creates danger, but the insistence
on it at the wrong time, in the wrong place, in front of the wrong people.
In the early 1600s, telling the truth was not always dangerous. What made it dangerous was refusing to
soften it. Refusing to delay it. Refusing to disguise it as theory or
philosophy. Galileo Galilei didn’t invent rebellion, and he certainly didn’t want to start
