Great Horned Owls: Apex Predators of Owls

Did you know that some owls are actually apex predators of other owls? Species like the

"Great Horned Owl" don’t just hunt small mammals or birds, they sometimes target

smaller owls. This behavior is called intraguild predation, where predators

eat others in their own ecological “guild.” Great Horned Owls are incredibly powerful and silent hunters,

swooping down under the cover of night to ambush unsuspecting smaller owls roosting or hunting nearby.

This strategy helps them reduce competition for food while taking advantage of a readily available meal.

In some regions, researchers have even documented repeated owl-on-owl predation,

showing that these nocturnal hunters aren’t just mysterious, they’re downright ruthless.
