In Guyana, Christmas is announced not only by carols and church bells, but by the sound
of drums, the sharp crack of a whip, and the movement of brightly dressed
figures dancing through the streets. Guyanese Christmas Masquerade, often called “Mas,”
has its roots in African traditions brought to Guyana during slavery. Enslaved Africans
preserved elements of their culture through music, rhythm, and movement,
even under harsh conditions. Over time, these traditions blended with European
influences from Christmas celebrations, creating a uniquely Guyanese form of expression.
