Harriet Tubman was born into slavery, but she refused to let her spirit be chained.
In her early twenties, she escaped — traveling alone, at night, guided only by the
North Star, to freedom in Pennsylvania. But she didn’t stop there. Freedom was not
hers alone to keep. Becoming a key conductor on the Underground Railroad, Tubman risked her
life again and again, returning to the South to lead others to freedom. She carried a revolver,
not to harm, but to protect — and once famously said, “I never ran my
train off the track, and I never lost a passenger.” By the end of her work, she had directly
freed at least 70 enslaved people, and helped hundreds more. During the Civil
