This moral asymmetry remains central to the conflict’s emotional weight. For Jews,
Israel became a guarantee of survival. For Palestinians, it became an imposed solution to a problem
they did not create. In 1947, the United Nations proposed partition. When Israel declared
independence in 1948, war erupted. Israel survived and expanded its
borders. Palestinians lost their political leadership, their homes,
and their cohesion as a society. Refugees settled in camps across neighboring Arab
