Japan Surrenders, Ending World War II

By 1945, Japan was still fighting despite massive losses. Cities were destroyed,

supplies were gone, and the war dragged on. Then came two atomic bombs — Hiroshima

on August 6 and Nagasaki on August 9. At the same time, the Soviet Union

invaded Japanese-held territory. Facing total destruction, Emperor Hirohito made a historic

decision. On August 15, 1945, Japan announced its surrender.
