Jesus the Bridegroom of His People

One day, the disciples of John the Baptist came to Jesus with a question.

“Why do we fast,” they asked, “but Your disciples do not?” Jesus answered with

an image no one expected: “Can the wedding guests mourn while the Bridegroom

is with them?” They paused. A bridegroom meant joy. Celebration.

Union. Jesus was revealing something profound about Himself. John the Baptist

had already understood it. He said: “The one who has the bride is the

bridegroom. The friend of the bridegroom rejoices greatly at his voice.” Jesus was not only

a teacher or a prophet. He was the Bridegroom — and His people were the bride.
