Joseph Tests His Brothers in Egypt

JOSEPH — The Famine and the Brothers’ Return Genesis 42 The years of plenty

passed, just as Joseph had said. When the famine came,

it was severe, reaching far beyond Egypt. The Bible says there was famine in all

lands, but in Egypt there was bread (Genesis 41:54). People from many

countries came to Egypt to buy grain, and Joseph was the governor over the land,

the one who sold to all. Back in Canaan, Jacob felt the famine as well.

He said to his sons, “Why do ye look one upon another?” and sent them to Egypt to buy food,

not knowing who ruled there (Genesis 42:1–2). Ten brothers went down to Egypt.
