Journey to North Korea Begins

Traveling to North Korea begins far from its borders. From Manila, I boarded a four-and-a-half-hour

flight to mainland China. I landed in Beijing, the capital of the People’s Republic

of China— a city of advanced technology, powerful infrastructure, and rapid growth.

With just my passport and ticket in hand, I boarded China’s high-speed train, racing toward the

eastern edge of the country. After five hours on the rails, I arrived in Dandong,

the final Chinese city before North Korea. Across the river lies Sinuiju,

a city in one of the most secretive and isolated nations on Earth. This is North Korea.
