Kamikaze: The Divine Wind Saves Japan

Japan was invaded by the largest empire on Earth and survived because of the wind. In the 13th century,

the Mongol Empire ruled most of Asia. Its leader, Kublai Khan, demanded Japan’s

submission. Japan refused. In 1274, Mongol forces crossed the sea and landed

on Kyushu. Samurai fought back, but the invaders were better equipped and organized.

Then a powerful storm struck the Mongol fleet. Ships were damaged, and the invasion

failed. Kublai Khan tried again in 1281. This time, he sent a massive

force over 4,000 ships and 100,000 soldiers. They gathered off Japan’s coast for

weeks. Then, in late summer, a typhoon slammed into the fleet.
