A sheriff and his deputies shot 19 striking miners, most of them in the back,
and got away with it. This is the true story of the Lattimer Massacre.
In 1897, immigrant miners in Pennsylvania faced brutal conditions. They worked ten-hour
shifts in constant danger of being crushed, all for terrible pay.
The final straw came when they were forced to walk an extra two hours a day,
unpaid, just to get their work mules. So, they peacefully
went on strike. On September 10th, about 400 unarmed miners marched toward the Lattimer mine,
hoping to convince other workers to join their new union. But the county sheriff and his posse of
