A government doesn’t fear guns. It fears people who can finally read the truth written
against them. Paulo Freire taught the poorest workers in Brazil to read, and suddenly the
government panicked. Why would teaching letters feel like a revolution? Because he didn’t
teach them to decode words—he taught them to decode their reality. They didn’t memorize
“apple” and “boat.” They discussed “land,” “power,” “rights.” And for the first time,
they saw poverty not as fate, but as something created by structures and policies.
This wasn’t education as consumption—it was education as awakening. And nothing terrifies
