The sun rises over fields that have fed families for generations. Cattle move slowly.
Children run barefoot along paths their grandparents once walked. This land has names,
stories, graves. It is home. Then, in 1913,
a law is signed. It is called the Native Land Act. With ink on paper, ownership is redrawn.
Overnight, nearly all the land in South Africa—about ninety percent of it—is reserved for
the white minority. Black Africans, the majority of the population, are confined to
small, overcrowded reserves. Land they lived on, farmed,
and protected for centuries is suddenly declared illegal for them to own. Families are told
