Machu Picchu: Earthquake-Resilient Architecture

Machu Picchu wasn’t just built to be beautiful, it was built to survive earthquakes.

The Incas used a technique called dry stone construction, fitting massive stones together

without mortar. Each block was carved so precisely that the walls could flex during seismic

shocks. Instead of cracking, the stones shift slightly and then settle back into

place. That’s why, centuries later, Machu Picchu still stands in one of

the most earthquake-prone regions on Earth.
