genuinely believed it. Doomsday preppers stockpiled supplies, some quit their
jobs, and NASA received thousands of panicked emails. But here's what
actually happened. The Mayan calendar never predicted an apocalypse. Scholars repeatedly
explained it was simply the end of a 5,125 year cycle, like an odometer rolling over.
The Maya themselves never said anything about the world ending. It was a complete
misinterpretation that spiraled out of control thanks to sensationalist media and Hollywood
