Did you know animals faced real courtrooms in medieval Europe. Pigs were prosecuted for murder,
rats for crop destruction, and even insects got summoned for trial. These weren't jokes.
Full legal proceedings happened with lawyers, witnesses, and judges. A sow in France
was actually executed for killing a child, dressed in human clothes for her hanging.
The Church believed animals had moral responsibility and could understand right from wrong.
Rats often won their cases though, because they never showed up to court. This bizarre legal
practice continued for centuries until the 1700s, showing how differently medieval society
viewed justice and the natural world.
