Membrane Proteins & Communication Membrane proteins are vital for cell function and communication.
They are divided into two main types based on their attachment to the lipid bilayer. Integral proteins
are embedded within the membrane, often spanning it entirely. Their hydrophobic
regions anchor them within the bilayer. They act as: Channels & Carriers: For transporting
ions and molecules. Receptors: For receiving chemical signals. Enzymes: For catalyzing reactions.
Peripheral proteins are temporarily attached to the membrane's surface, either to the lipid
heads or to integral proteins. This allows them to easily associate and dissociate,
making them ideal for rapid signaling and regulating the activity of integral proteins.
