Messina Earthquake and Tsunami, 1908

December 28th, 1908. Before dawn, southern Italy is struck by one of

the most powerful earthquakes in European history. In seconds, Messina and Reggio

Calabria collapse. Buildings fall, streets vanish, and tens of thousands are left exposed.

Many survivors flee toward the shoreline, seeking open ground and safety. Moments later,

a tsunami sweeps the coast, killing those who had escaped the first disaster.

More than 80,000 lives are lost. The tragedy shocks the world and reminds us that nature often
