On November 18, 326 AD, Pope Sylvester I consecrated Old St. Peter’s Basilica
in Rome, a monumental church commissioned by Emperor Constantine I,
the first Roman emperor to convert to Christianity. Construction began around 318 AD and
took about 40 years to complete, built over Saint Peter’s burial site, one of Jesus’s apostles
and regarded as the first pope. The basilica featured a Latin cross layout with a long nave,
double aisles, and an atrium, richly decorated with mosaics and frescoes reflecting
contemporary art styles. It became a pivotal site for Christian pilgrimage and ceremonies,
